Tribute to Adela Akers

(ADELA AKERS 1933-2023) The Art World lost a very special person on August 9 th of this year. I lost a wonderful friend. Adela’s work never ceased to astound and inspire me. Turning 90 years young, she would call to chat and let me know about a piece that had recently sold or had been placed in a museums collection, only to immediately turn the conversation checking on how I was feeling.

How does one respond to such a sentence? Alas it was Adela and I laughed and assured her I was doing just fine.

To know that people she cared for were well was an elixir for her. She rattled off names of mutual friends, inquiring about their health and then commanding me to pass

on her love to them, which I dutifully respond that I would. At this point she says “my nurse just arrived, I’ll speak with you soon “and she always ended with I love you. That was our last conversation. That’s sums up Adela. Her love is everywhere. It is woven into every warp and weft. It can be found in the permanent collections of more than 20 national museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the de Young, the Smithsonian and Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Arts and Design. Her oral history can be found in the Smithsonian archives.

(https://www.aaa.si.edu/collections/interviews/oral-history-interview-adela-akers-13680) She was a Fellow of the American Craft Council, a Pollack-Krasner Foundation recipient, two Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, 4 National Endowments for the Arts Individual Arts Grant to name but a few.

“Cloth, as it is being woven, is rolled onto a beam at the front of

the loom. The finished work can only be seen in its entirety, as it is unrolled from this beam. There is an almost mournful squeaking from my loom as the roller is turned to reveal the cloth as if it is reluctant

to give up its secrets.”
