Online Lecture:
Group ’55 and the Philadelphia Abstract Artists
Lecturer: Dr. Barbara Wolanin, Guest Curator, Group ’55 and Midcentury Abstraction in Philadelphia
Dr. Barbara Wolanin will explore the history of Group ’55 and how she became engaged with midcentury abstract painting in Philadelphia. Wolanin will talk about who the members were, how some of them branched off into the Philadelphia Abstract Artists, and focus on their accomplishments and how they made a difference in the art world in 1950s Philadelphia and even today.

Friends of the Wissahickon Virtual Valley Talk:
Art and History of the Wissahickon
The Wissahickon Valley’s unique beauty has inspired artists for hundreds of years. Join FOW Trail ambassador Diane Garvey and Woodmere Art Museum Curator of Education Hildy Tow as they discuss depictions of the Wissahickon from colonial paintings through contemporary art, and explore the particular significance it had to the Romantic and Impressionist movements, as well as the wide variety of public art in the park.

Annual Meeting of Members & Group ’55 Tour
Woodmere Art Museum members are invited to join the 2020 Annual Members Meeting. This virtual meeting will include a presentation from Director and CEO William Valerio, as well as an online tour of Woodmere’s latest exhibition, Group ‘55 and Midcentury Abstraction in Philadelphia, by Woodmere’s Assistant Curator Rachel Hruszkewycz.

Open House Reception: Just In: SCHOFIELD Celebrating the Art of Uncle Elmer
November 7, 2020 – January 10, 2021
Join Woodmere for an online open house celebrating the generous gift of paintings by Walter Elmer Schofield from the artist’s niece Margaret Phillips and the extended Schofield Phillips family. A leader of the Pennsylvania Impressionists and a central figure in the broader phenomenon of American Impressionism, Schofield worked in Philadelphia and abroad in Cornwall, England, where he made his home. This exhibition will showcase masterpieces such as Montmartre (c. 1896) and Early Winter Morning (1908–9), as well as the recent gift of The Steam Trawlers, Boulogne (1909).

Circle of Trees Holiday Event
Virtual & In-person
For 2020, Woodmere and the Chestnut Hill Business and Community Associations offer a reimagined Circle of Trees event to kick off the holiday season in Chestnut Hill. Children of all ages can enjoy a virtual appearance by Santa, choir performance by Norwood Fontbonne Academy’s Note-ables, and the countdown to illuminating Woodmere’s holiday lights. Santa will end the event with an in-person procession by firetruck through the neighborhood, making four designated stops along the way.

A Winter Show: Wind and Winters at Wanamaker’s
Through January 10, 2021
This holiday season, Woodmere offers a one-of-a-kind exhibition in addition to Christmas Present…and Past, its holiday show of nineteenth century holiday trimmings and antique toys. Wind and Winters at Wanamaker’s showcases the designs of Wanamaker’s vintage store displays by John Winters and provides a unique shopping experience for visitors. In collaboration with RAGO and its winter jewelry auction, Woodmere is pleased to offer jewelry from the personal collection of the late artist, Dina Wind. Both exhibitions will open Saturday, November 21.

Thanksgiving Holiday: Museum Closed

Straw Journey 2020
Open During Museum Hours
Explore the Straw Journey, a series of straw installations around Woodmere’s outdoor sculptures and grounds. The Journey will be open through November during Museum hours. Participants can pay for admission in person and pick up the Straw Journey Passport packet, an activity guide designed to make connections between Woodmere’s outdoor sculpture and straw installations.

The holidays are approaching! Woodmere members receive 20% off one purchase November 27- 29. While the brick and mortar store is closed to in-person shopping at this time, let Museum Store Director Stephen Kerzner do the shopping for you! Upcoming Adult & Children’s Classes
Various dates and times; Classes begin November 2
The registration deadline for adult and children classes is quickly approaching. Adult classes are offered online and in-person in abstract and representational drawing, painting, and watercolor. Children can participate in two Kids Care Workshops to create artworks as holiday gifts for people who are homebound with illness. Young Artists on Exhibit: Woodmere’s Studio Program is a great option for students who would love to see their artwork exhibited in Woodmere’s Millard Gallery. And for families with preschoolers, the first Sunday of each month features Woodmere’s Artmaking & Storytelling program.
