The Evocative Deception of Trompe l’oeil
Trompe l’oeil has been an emerging theme for us this year at Gravers Lane. Meaning “fool the eye”, it’s a term for how artists subvert the visual field to create surprising moments of realization for the viewer, often employed by craft artists to explore the technical limits of their chosen medium. Maybe it’s our increasingly forced familiarity with AI that makes these irl visual illusions feel more comforting. With trompe l’oeil, the deception is intentional and transparent. We’re allowed to become fully enamored with the illusion without moral ambiguity.

Ron Isaacs Wise Child2022 | Acrylic on birch plywood construction. 37″ x 20″ x 3.25″. $8,250This week, we say goodbye to Human/Nature, which demonstrated the facility with which master woodworker Ron Isaacs could transmute plywood into fabric and leaf. Pieces like Wise Child invited you to visualize the shirt hanging on the line. To feel the fresh starch on your skin. Evocative in a way that Tide Fresh Scent could only dream of aspiring to. We’ll keep Ron’s work on hand a while longer if you haven’t had the chance to visit yet. It’s an absolute must-see in person

Eric Serritella Roots, Opus2017 | Ceramic. 26 x 43 x 15 horiz, 52 x 18 x 15 vert. $26,400Coming later this fall, Eric Serritella brings us back into the woods with the warm vitality of tree bark coaxed from ceramic. These boiling days of July if you visit Roots, Opus in the front window, the touch of the cool clay is soothing, hinting at spongy moss inhabiting the white and gray folds, holding in precious moisture.

Brian Richmond High Life2025 | Acrylic and enamel paint on sculpted paper. Double scale. $1,760Summer also brings other celebrations and rituals that are distinctly American. With that being said, we were pleased to stumble upon local fiber artist Brian Richmond whose Americana still life found a place in the window just in time for July 4. Similar to Ron Isaacs, Brian painstakingly recreates scenes from his daily travels in paper and gesso, hand-painting familiar logos and crease lines to capture indelible memories of our current cultural repository. We’re excited to bring in more of Brian’s work in the future; he has some interesting projects in store.
Next up at Gravers Lane is Fiber Reimagined IV, in partnership with Fiber Art Now magazine. We’re always honored to be the selected physical Gallery to host work from the winners of this annual juried competition. You’ll see pieces from emerging and established artists working in all manner of fiber arts – from knotting and coiling to felting, collage, and crochet. There are wall works, jewelry pieces, vases, and installations that capture the cutting edge of this versatile medium that has been exploding in global popularity. Though not intended to be trompe l’oeil, you’ll find several artists who are creating facsimiles of familiar objects in novel media like Elizabeth Caputo’s Leather Boot, and Susanne Williams’ wedding dress made from folded and pressed plastic bags. Look for a sneak peek of the exhibition beginning July 23, then come back to hear from the artists in person at the official opening on August 7. See you there!
