The stories behind the work are often what move us as collectors, inviting us to share in that journey of exploration and discovery that produces the pieces we fall in love with. Gallery Associate Rachael Forbes has been launching a series of in-depth conversations with our artists to explore their personal journeys and inspirations. Read an excerpt from her recent visit with Jan Morgen (below), whose piece, A Place of Knowing, is currently on display in the Gallery. The entire second floor has been brought down to its studs and has been this way for years. With only natural light and open windows illuminating the space, the studio gives Jan and her work room to breathe. Her work, primarily consisting of large mixed-media pieces made of paper, gesso, oil paint, and wood, holds depths of thought and feeling. Her paintings serve as stories, telling the viewer of her life and humanity. The work is scarred, marred with mistakes, but filled with a depth of mystery, understanding, and sorrow. Many, if not most, of her pieces begin on the floor of her studio, each morphing and changing over time before eventually standing upright, finding a life of their own.Each painting consists of layer upon layer of symbols, materials, and methodical application. Jan’s work often takes, at minimum, 8 months to years to create. By purposely choosing to only work with natural lighting, her pieces ebb and change with the natural progression of time and consist of not only physical layers but also layers of thought and feeling, translated into texture and symbolism. “I go beneath what is. The ancients capture me. I use that imagery to make it my own… I have no interest in quantity. If I go fast, they lose their meaning and become mere doodles.
