BACK TO THE GARDEN

By the time we got to the Warbler,
We were two-and-a-half dozen strong …
With apologies to Joni Mitchell, we at The Blue Warbler Corner and Garden have for months felt “we’ve got to get ourselves back to the garden” — that is, to our planted-but-not-yet-activated garden patio. Guests and staff alike have been wondering when we would make good on that part of our name. Last week, on a balmy Wednesday evening, it happened for the first time. We had enough staff and a good forecast, so we opened the gate. The string lights glowed, music wafted across the patio, and 30 or so people over the course of the night enjoyed grilled branzino, eggplant schnitzel, peach crisp and good conversation. In fact, that night we were visited by Adam Barbanel-Fried and his family. Adam is the founder of Changing the Conversation, a civic group dedicated to activating dormant voters and reclaiming democracy one congressional district at a time. The following night there was a monsoon, and the next few evenings the garden patio was on-again and off-again due to the forecast. We hope to get more stretches of patio-perfect weather going into the fall, and we plan to add more tables and chairs outside, on the sidewalk, in the coming weeks.Outdoor seating will always be first-come, first-served, because we don’t trust forecasts enough to risk taking reservations. We’re asking people to not go straight to the garden, but to seek the host inside the entrance and wait to be seated. It might require a little patience if many people arrive at once. We’re cautiously optimistic that any delays will be worth the wait — just as the wait until now to incorporate outdoor seating has been! Thanks for your support and enthusiasm!
