In Conversation: Susanna Gold & Barbara Bullock
Speakers: Susanna W. Gold, PhD, guest curator of Africa in the Arts of Philadelphia; Barbara Bullock, artist
Join Susanna W. Gold, PhD, and Barbara Bullock in a conversation about Bullock’s art and experiences at the Ile-Ife Black Humanitarian Center in North Philadelphia in the 1970s. There, Bullock interacted with artists Charles Searles and Twins Seven-Seven and was the director of the art department from 1971-75, building a strong community arts program. The conversation will include a discussion about the artists’ connections to Africa in the development of their artistic voices.

Discovering Connections: From Nigeria to Philadelphia

This two-part workshop is designed to enrich teaching in world cultures and contemporary art. It begins at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology on March 7 and concludes one week later at Woodmere, where we examine the exhibition, Africa in the Arts of Philadelphia. Tempesta di Mare: A French Experience
Musician: Adam Pearl, harpsichord
The French Baroque harpsichord repertoire is known for its unique delicacy and beauty. Adam Pearl performs harpsichord solos from the late baroque period by Balbastre (harpsichord teacher to Thomas Jefferson’s daughters while in Paris), Forqueray, Duphly, and Royer, and talks about why this music lives as viscerally today as it did centuries ago.

Family Circus Festival: Juggling Color
Bring the family to Woodmere for an afternoon full of circus arts fun! From noon-2pm enjoy artmaking and storytelling activities while mime artists and stilt walkers from the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts roam the galleries. Join Jefferson University textile and costume curator Jade Papa for a presentation on the extensive collection of African textiles at the University. She will discuss the functionality and cultural significance of these textiles combined with a show-and-tell of the tools used to create them.

Musician: Daniel Hsu, piano
Daniel Hsu will perform Franz Liszt’s powerful and emotional, Sonata in B Minor, considered by many to be his ultimate masterpiece. Hsu will also perform Schumann’s Kinderszenen (“Scenes from Childhood”), Op. 15, a set of thirteen pieces that convey the many moods of childhood memories.
