Lecture: The Devil’s In the Details: What the Dress of the Teackle Sisters Reveal (virtual)
Lecturer: Jade Papa, Curator of the Textile and Costume Collection, The Design Center and Adjunct Professor, Thomas Jefferson University
Rembrandt Peale’s portrait of Henrietta Teackle and Thomas Sully’s portrait of Esther Maria Fisher Teackle reveal stylish women who, to use a modern fashion phrase, are “on trend” regarding their dress, accessories, and hairstyles. Their chic looks epitomize the era’s styles which drew heavily on classical Greek and Roman art and architecture. This talk will focus on the painted details to illuminate the fashions of the period while also revealing the broader significance of their dress.
