Classical Saturdays returns with
Women and Virtue: An Evening of Art Songs
Performers: Benjamin C.S. Boyle, piano; Rebecca Myers, soprano
Join us for our Classical season opener! Soprano Rebecca Myers and composer and pianist Benjamin C.S. Boyle present an evening of evocative art songs of the 19th through the 21st centuries, revealing the choices women have faced throughout the ages. The program will include music of Benjamin Boyle, Samuel Barber, Gabriel Fauré, and Francis Poulenc.

In the context of Our Town: A Retrospective of Edith Neff, Susan Shifrin will explore art historian James Elkins’s thought-provoking work The Object Stares Back: On the Nature of Seeing. This lecture will delve into the intersecting encounters between the viewer and the people and places that Neff commits to canvas.

Lecturer: David Serkin Ludwig
Musicians: Sara Han, clarinet; Doron Laznow, bassoon; Gabriel Kovach, horn; Benjamin Schmid, violin; Haeji Kim, viola; John Lee, cello; Marcus Elliott Gaved, double bass
Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat major, Op. 20, was one of the most popular of the composer’s works during his lifetime. A special evening devoted to the piece will begin with a lecture about Beethoven and the Septet by David Serkin Ludwig, Chair of Composition Studies at Curtis, followed by a complete performance of the work.
