Let yourself be transported back to the era of picture shows as Secret Cinema brings a selection of classic comedy shorts—all projected from 16mm prints—to Tuesday Nights at the Movies. This celebration of vintage comedy’s timeless appeal includes Laurel and Hardy’s Busy Bodies (1933), the Three Stooges’ Oscar-nominated Men in Black (1934), and George Burns and Gracie Allen. Animated classics will include Tex Avery’s A Feud There Was (1938), Chuck Jones’ Kiss Me Cat (1953), and Betty Boop, Service with a Smile (1937). Other films will include Society Mugs (1944), Movie Pests (1944), and the very rare 1931 short, Honeymoon Trio.
Founded by Chestnut Hill Film Group board member Jay Schwartz, Secret Cinema has been the Philadelphia-area’s premier floating repertory cinema series since 1992. Drawing largely on its own private film archive, Secret Cinema brings audiences the rare and underseen genres that fall between the cracks—always on real celluloid.
Get Carter
Tuesday, March 25, 7PM
1971
112 minutes
A brutal British gangster film directed by Mike Hodges (Croupier) in his directorial debut, Get Carter stars Michael Caine as a mobster who returns to his hometown to investigate his brother’s suspicious death. The film’s stark portrayal of violence and corruption, set against the bleak industrial backdrop of Newcastle, has cemented its place as a classic of British cinema and inspired such films as Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Steven Soderbergh’s The Limey. Also starring Ian Hendry, John Osborne, and Britt Ekland. If you’ve only seen the 2000 remake starring Sylvester Stallone (voted by one film website as the “worst remake of all time”), treat yourself to the original!
