Join Friends of the Wissahickon for Super Saturday Volunteer Days

Help Keep the Trails in Top Shape

Wissahickon Valley Park’s 50 miles of natural surface trail feel the effects of more 1.1 million visits a year, in addition to the impact of increased storm water flows due to the urban landscape that surrounds the park. This all adds up to a lot of impact on a delicate piece of infrastructure. To keep the trails functioning, as well as keep excess soil out of our waterways, the trails require regular maintenance.

Friends of the Wissahickon (FOW) is looking for “Super Volunteers” to lend a much-needed – and appreciated — hand on these upcoming special Saturday work days:

Spring Love Your Park Day –May 12 – 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Kick off “Love Your Park Week” in the Wissahickon with FOW to help make trail improvements and remove bamboo around the Hermitage and Hermit’s Cave. “Love Your Park Week” is a biannual city-wide event that engages volunteers to help keep Philadelphia’s green spaces safe, welcoming, and fun recreation destinations as part of a collaborative partnership among Philadelphia Parks & Recreations, the Park Friends Network, and Fairmount Park Conservancy. Meet at the Hermitage Mansion (700 Hermit’s Lane, Philadelphia, 19128).

National Trails Day –June 2 – 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

FOW celebrates National Trails Day every year with a trail work day. This year, the organization is sponsoring a group spruce-up for Forbidden Drive, named 2018 Trail of the Year by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Meet at Valley Green Inn.

Workdays will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain or snow, thunder and lighting, high winds, etc. Visit FOW’s Facebook page or the Upcoming Work Days page at fow.org for updates. If the workday is cancelled it will be posted by 8 am.
