Two styles of music that stirred controversy: Jazz icon and pianist Thelonious Monk played his soul in a unique, improvisational way; and a group of English teens composed and performed a new brand of melodies and rock n’roll that inspired music fans. Pianist Jim Holton and guitarist Frank Butrey put together the music of these innovators with exciting results.

Lecture | What’s in a Name? George Biddle and the Biddle Dynasty

Lecturer: John Vick, Director of Collections, Interpretation, and Engagement, The Andalusia Foundation
Born into an illustrious Philadelphia family of politicians, bankers, and lawyers, artist George Biddle distanced himself from his relatives and the society he felt they represented. This talk sketches out 300 years of Biddle history and profiles some of the family’s more unique characters, suggesting that George had more in common with them than he wanted to admit.
Members’ Tour | Phillips Mill: Home of the New Hope Art Colony
Tuesday, October 11 at 10 am | FREE
Enjoy a special trip and guided tour to Phillips Mill, PA, the birthplace of Pennsylvania Impressionism. Carol Cruikshank, executive director of New Hope Arts and historian of Pennsylvania Impressionism, will talk about the storied art colony that began at the Mill at the turn of the twentieth century. Artist Robert Beck will provide an artist’s perspective on Phillips’ Mill today.
Members’ Tour | Andalusia: Ancestral Home of the Biddle Family
Tuesday, October 20 at 10:00 am | FREE
Enjoy a private tour of Andalusia, the beautiful and historic home of the Biddle family. The estate overlooks the Delaware River and is surrounded by native woodlands and beautiful gardens. After the tour, members can explore the gardens until 1 pm. Bring a picnic lunch or go out to eat in the area.
