Each year, on the last Sunday in April, folks have come to the Wissahickon to celebrate the fact that “Forbidden Drive” was successfully closed to cars in 1921 due to a protest that brought together hundreds of horses, ridden or pulling carriages. Fortunately, the initiative was defeated.
Wissahickon Day includes traditional equestrian events. A horse show at Northwestern Stables will start at 10 AM, featuring English and Western riders as well as carriages. A Fancy Hat competition will take place at approximately 11 AM with prizes awarded in three categories: fancy, clever, funny. After the show, parade line up begins and will proceed along Forbidden Drive.
So bring your cameras and be ready to show appreciation for the 4-legged animals that kept the 4-wheeled motor vehicles at bay!
