Invitation

Dear Friends of the Water Tower Recreation Center,

On Thursday, June 13, at sunset, the historic Chestnut Hill Water Tower will be illuminated for the first time. This is the culmination of the “Light Up the Tower” project which raised over $113,000 for improvements to the park surrounding the historic tower. All are invited to participate in the countdown, which will take place at 8:30PM. Refreshments and water tower themed items will be offered free to attendees, and it will be a thrilling sight to watch the transformation. Please join us!

The lighting design of the tower and adjacent grounds was created by Lee Waldron, whose award-winning firm, Grenald Waldron Associates, has been lighting the exteriors of notable projects throughout the world since 1968. Projects include the lighting of Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House to the U.S. Capital and the Independence Hall façade and the Liberty Bell Pavilion here in Philadelphia.

The Chestnut Hill project employs the latest warm-toned, energy effective LED lighting technology which will graze the tower with dappled light. The plan also includes the addition of three lampposts, pathway lights, and small in ground accent lights pointing up at the WW ll Memorial plaques so they can be easily read. All lighting is intended to minimize glare from light sources and to create a pleasant space at night.

A sign detailing the fascinating history of the tower has already been installed and is getting a lot of attention from visitors to the park. It is surrounded by a colorful garden tended by volunteer gardeners who have been weeding, planting, and watering throughout the spring. The WW ll Memorial has also been repointed, a new bench across from the tower has been installed, and the flagstone paths have been restored.  Research continues about the tower, which may be the oldest extant tower in the United States. You can read more detailed information about the tower, the memorial, and the landscape plan at our newly created website: http://ww2memorial.ch.  A QR code will also be displayed at the park with a link to the site.

Because of your generosity, visitors to the park will enjoy these wonderful improvements for years to come. We hope to see you on Thursday to celebrate the beautification of our lovely park!

We will be forever grateful for the support of our wonderful Chestnut Hill Community!

Sincerely,

The Water Tower Advisory Fundraising Committee
