The Mask of Dimitrios

1944

95 minutes

The feature film debut for director Jean Negulseco (Humoresque, How to Marry a Millionaire), this moody noir stars the irresistibly watchable Peter Lorre as timid Dutch mystery writer, Cornelius Leyden, working to piece together clues about the life of deceased criminal Dimitros Makropoulos (Zachary Scott). In pursuit of the truth, Leydon begins a quest that sends him careening through Europe – from Istanbul to Sophia, Geneva, and Paris – as he encounters suspicious characters and attempts to avoid deadly traps. Chock full of Film Noir hallmarks (betrayal, intrigue, blackmail, and double crosses), The Mask of Dimitrios boasts action, suspense, and a talented cast that includes Sydney Greenstreet, who worked with Lorre on nine films including The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca.
