Each Wednesday evening in September, dine and drink in the 7100 block of Germantown Avenue.

Every Wednesday this September, the 7100 block of Germantown Avenue will transform into a dining room, as guests will enjoy fare from 11 restaurants and bars—out in the street. With Supper Sessions on the Avenue, Mt. Airy restaurants and bars will bring tables, chairs, and service out onto the Belgian blocks and trolley tracks in the middle of Germantown Avenue for a unique, Open Streets dining experience.

Mt. Airy USA, who organized the event along with the Mt. Airy Business Improvement District and the Business Association of Mt. Airy, got the idea from a similar successful event in Media, Pa. called “Dining Under the Stars.”

“Supper Sessions will celebrate local restaurants while maintaining an outdoor summer neighborhood tradition,” said Brad Copeland, executive director of Mt. Airy USA. “This year, we’re engaging our local businesses as well as a host of neighborhood-based arts and cultural organizations to collaboratively create an outdoor event that will hopefully become an annual tradition. Although Street Fare has been a successful event in years past, local businesses did not experience the increase in business we’d all expected. The goal of Supper Sessions is to support these great local businesses that everyone can be a part of.”

Supper Sessions replaces Street Fare, a night market that has occurred in years past. Diners will be served from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. while Germantown Avenue is closed to traffic. The #23 SEPTA bus that travels on the block will be rerouted a block away during these evenings.

To add to the alfresco dining experience, musicians will perform along the street and guests can participate in pop-up events along the avenue hosted by community organizations, which will keep later hours during the series.  Supper Sessions will temporarily close the municipal parking lot on the block, but the Sedgwick Theatre lot, with an entrance on Chew Avenue, will be open, just a half a block away.
