“Une Exposition d’Arts Obsessionels de la Fibre”

For many decades Philadelphia has championed studio crafts boasting noted educational institutions, public and private exhibition spaces and one of the first museum supported crafts shows in the United States, founded by the Women’s Committee of The Philadelphia Museum of Art. Through their tireless efforts, the museum has amassed an extraordinary contemporary collection.

A highlight of the cities efforts was Fiber Philadelphia 2012, a citywide 4-month event showcasing 61 exhibitions dedicated to artists working with fiber materials and or techniques associated with textile design. With “Une Exposition d’Arts Obessionels de la Fibre”, Gravers Lane Gallery honors the supporting institutions and the studio textile arts working today. The exhibition will comprise works by more than 40 regional, national and international artists working with or utilizing techniques associated with Studio Textile practices.

Often voiced as complex and obsessive, based in traditionally regional and often for utilitarian purposes or decorative woman’s parlor practice, the world of Studio Fiber and Textile Arts is becoming more recognized and appreciated in the Fine Art World. From the Venice Biennale to Art Basil, artists are turning the materials and techniques for a fresh means of expression. The exhibition will be hung in a Salon style paying homage to the Salon (French: Salon), or rarely Paris Salon (French: Salon de Paris [salɔ̃ də paʁi]), which began in 1667 and was the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Between 1748 and 1890 it was arguably the greatest annual or biennial art event in the Western world.

Artists will include Adela Akers, Kate Anderson, Polly Barton, Pamela Becker, Sue Benner, Lanny Bergner, Mary Bero, Yvonne P. Bobrowicz, Ruth Borgenicht, Marcia Docter, Carol Eckert, Cynthia Friedman, Leslie Grigsby, Melissa Maddonni Haims, Betsy Hershberg, Pat Hickman, Bruce Hoffman, Gabriela Horvat, Jan Hopkins, Dianne K.
