Friday the Thirteenth

Since there are there are only two more MALT classes starting before the Winter term begins on January 13th, we thought you might appreciate some between-term learning!

It’s Friday the Thirteenth, and you know what that means — bad luck! Fear of Friday the 13th is rooted in ancient, separate bad-luck associations: the number 13 and the day Friday. There are Norse myths, biblical references, and ancient Roman stories about the danger of the number. There’s even a mathematical reasoning: Apparently, 12 is a “complete number” (the 12 months of the year, 12 zodiac signs, 12 apostles…), and adding 1 just makes everyone feel “restless and squirmy.”

Friday the 13th has been considered an unlucky day in Western culture since the 1800’s. Consequently, more than 80% of high-rises lack a 13th floor. Many airports skip Gate 13, and believe it or not, one expert estimated that $800 or $900 million of revenue is lost on this day because people choose not to fly or do business they would normally do. They say 17-20 million Americans are affected by the fear of this day!

But if you’re afflicted by triskaidekaphobia (fear of the number 13), it might help you to know that other parts of the world have different unlucky numbers and days (Tuesday the 13th for Greeks and many Spanish-speaking countries, and Friday the 17th in Italy!). Meanwhile, studies have disproved any correlation between Friday the 13th and the rate of accidents.

We hope that bit of learning holds you over for the next few weeks, as we put the finishing touches on the Winter catalog and the 225+ courses within it. Until then, don’t walk under any ladders!
