We’re so excited to be hosting the authors Christina Larocco & Heather Shafter next Saturday. Each has written a biography of an important activist whose work and legacy we hope to see carried forward.
Crosshatch: Martha Schofield, the Forgotten Feminist (1839–1916) introduces readers to Schofield, who became famous teaching free people in post–Civil War South Carolina. The narrative follows Schofield from the Underground Railroad outposts of southeastern Pennsylvania to war-ravaged South Carolina. As an abolitionist, a women’s suffragist, and a white teacher of Black students, she spent a lifetime attempting to develop (however imperfectly) an antiracist feminist vision.
Life of Libby: Chasing Peace & Justice with Humor, Guts, & Passion profiles Libby Frank whose activist work began in the 1940s. Frank participated in public swimming pool desegregation actions, support for farm and factory worker strikes, and actions to end the Vietnam War. Her story shows us that the power of change lies in working with others for a common cause.
Join us for this conversation in our backyard on Saturday, June 28th at 2pm!
