Meet the Musicians

We’re on a roll with free musical performances at the Chestnut Hill Library. We’ve invited musicians from many different genres and are proud to continue to explore genres from around the world and the country. Please put our next two performances on your calendar.

Established in Philadelphia in 1969, Kulu Mele is the the nation’s longest-enduring African dance company. Kulu Mele embodies West Africa, Cuban, and African Diasporan traditions, along with American hip hop, and brings African dance, drums, and culture to communities throughout our city.

Junk Drawer String Band is composed of odds and ends of the Philly Bluegrass and Old-Time scene. The band includes contradance fiddler Cecelia Tannous-Taylor, Midnight Flyer banjo player Andy Davis, Red Tail Rounders guitarist Austin Alfano, and Renée “Ray” Drezner (formerly of The Cheddar Boys & bandleader of the local Joni Mitchell tribute band). Junk Drawer String Band delivers an exuberant performance that combines powerful vocals with virtuosic strumming and picking, plus a rubberband ball and a couple of buttons.

We’re excited to welcome Harold Buchanan, co-author of Seven Sisters & A Brother: Friendship, Resistance, and Untold Truths Behind Black Student Activism in the 1960s.

This book gives visibility to the historical struggle for black studies and the small group of Swarthmore students, who in the words of Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, “risked their futures to make a difference.” This book follows the organizers of an eight-day sit-in at Swarthmore College’s Admissions Office.

Author Event at the Library
As Women’s History Month arrives, we’ll welcome Karen Bojar to the Chestnut Hill Library branch. Her latest book traces the origins of socialist feminism, including the activists who influenced movements across Europe and the US. Free to attend, with book signings to follow the talk.
