Join the Chestnut Hill Conservancy for Ask the Experts: Recycled Landscapes with Hans Hesselein, RLA, LEED AP, and Martha Keen of Apiary Studio. Apiary Studio is a Philadelphia-based design/build landscape practice specializing in creating sustainable landscapes from materials often considered waste.
Hans Hesselein is a registered landscape architect from North Carolina State University with a BLA. He has worked internationally and previously served as Executive Director of the Gowanus Canal Conservancy in Brooklyn, NY.
Martha Keen, a graduate of St. Johns College and the Professional Gardener Program at Longwood Gardens, is the horticulture manager at Apiary Studio. She has over a decade of experience working in city parks and public gardens, including Prospect Park in New York and Wyck in Philadelphia.
During this virtual lecture, Hans and Martha will share their approach to giving recycled materials and disused spaces a second life. They will discuss the design challenges and opportunities of working with materials from demolition sites, scraps, and cutoffs. Their presentation will highlight the importance of thoughtful craft and sustainable construction in landscape design, showing how the lightest touch can often lead to the most impactful solutions.
Learning Objectives:
- Explore creative ways to incorporate reused and recycled materials into landscape designs.
- Discuss preservation through the salvage and reuse of building waste.
- Understand the challenges and opportunities in using recycled materials versus new materials in construction projects.
This free program is made possible by the Conservancy’s Lead Sponsor, Chubb, our General Sponsors and members, the Ask the Experts event sponsor, Harth Builders, and the supporting sponsor, Wallace Landscape Associates. It is done in collaboration with the Chestnut Hill Community Association.
