20th Anniversary of Philadelphia’s Garden District

In 1997, then Mayor Edward G. Rendell proclaimed the Chestnut Hill neighborhood as “Philadelphia’s Garden District.”  In celebration of the 20th anniversary of this designation, the Chestnut Hill Business District and various community partners will welcome regional residents and tourists for numerous special events and programs through the spring and summer months. All dates and times subject to change.

Morris Arboretum in Motion

Opening April 1

Visitors will experience more than 30 kinetic wind sculptures, ranging in height from 5 to 27 feet, by American artist Lyman Whitaker throughout the garden.

Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival at Morris Arboretum

Saturday, April 8 & Saturday, April 15, 10am-3pm

The Arboretum will be in bloom with cherry trees and traditional Japanese cultural activities, including authentic Taiko drumming and tea demonstrations.

Flower Power Happy Hours

Thursday, April 20 & Thursday, April 27, 6 pm

Chestnut Hill will kick off the 20th anniversary celebration with flower-themed happy hour events with floral-themed cocktails and extended store hours along the Germantown Avenue business district.

The Journeys of John Laub: Fire Island and Beyond at the Woodmere Art Museum

This exhibition will explore Philadelphia artist John Laub’s garden and landscape paintings.

Chestnut Hill Conservancy Cultural Landscapes Tour Series

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Chestnut Hill Conservancy and Historical Society will host a series of public outings to explore parks, gardens and architecture throughout the historic Chestnut Hill neighborhood.

Chestnut Hill Home & Garden Festival

Sunday, May 7, 11 am – 5 pm

Chestnut Hill blossoms into an outdoor garden marketplace as more than 150 home and garden vendors, artists and craftsmen line Germantown Avenue. This free, family-friendly event draws more than 30,000 visitors. The 2017 festival will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Chestnut Hill’s designation as “Philadelphia’s Garden District” with a rededication event.

Chestnut Hill Plein Air Festival

Artists, easels and paint pallets will line Germantown Avenue as they create works of art and compete for cash prizes during Plein Air, an inspired outdoor and public juried art competition.

This is the longest running outdoor concert series in Philadelphia. Last year over 5,000 people attended at least 1 concert. Come hear a diverse set of bands and musicians in the backdrop of one of Chestnut Hills most majestic backdrops. We encourage attendees to bring blankets and chairs and enjoy the music.
