Calling all Scarecrows for Morris Arboretum’s 9th Annual Scarecrow Design Contest!

They’re baaaack!  We’re talking about more than 30 not-so-scary, scarecrows in Morris Arboretum’s annual Scarecrow Design Contest.  This year participants may create a scarecrow for the theme:  Sense of Adventure.  Think Edmund Hillary, Sacagawea, Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games, or Captain Kirk from Star Trek, just to name a few daring explorers.  Who will you create?

Sign-up by Thursday, September 22 to ensure your place in the contest.  Entry fee is $30, with a $5 discount for those who register by Friday, September 9.  Scarecrow frames, straw, burlap and twine are all provided.  Details and on-line registration are available atwww.bit.ly/MAcrows .

These scarecrows will be on display along Scarecrow Walk at the Oak Allée for four weekends, from Saturday, October 1 through Sunday October 23.  Now in its ninth year and more popular than ever, Scarecrow Walk is a must see for the fall season.  Visitors of all ages may vote for their favorite scarecrow to determine which will be the winners.  Prizes will be awarded to the top five winning Scarecrow designers.  Start election season early with Scarecrow viewing & voting at Morris Arboretum!

The Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania is located at 100 East Northwestern Avenue in the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia.  The 92-acre horticulture display garden features a spectacular collection of mature trees in a beautiful and colorful landscape. The Arboretum includes numerous picturesque spots such as a formal rose garden, historic water features, a swan pond, and the only remaining freestanding fernery in North America. The arboretum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is also the official arboretum of Pennsylvania. A permanent nationally award winning exhibit, Out on a Limb – a Tree Adventure adds to Morris Arboretum’s allure by transporting visitors 50 feet up into the treetops on a canopy walk that requires no climbing.  Open weekdays 10am-4pm and weekends 10am-5pm (Apr-Oct).  Open late on Wednesdays in June, July, and August until 8:00pm.  For more information, visitwww.morrisarboretum.org.
