“A Letter from the Desk of Lilibet”

Hello, dear readers, and a very happy March (and Women’s History Month) to you from Lilibet!

Yesterday was the start of daylight saving time (and learning that, stylistically, it is not daylight savings time was new to our staff writing this email) – hopefully, you have caught up on the sleep you may have missed when your clocks sprang forward. And if you want to read about the origins of the shift, The New York Times ran an interesting article on March 3rd about it. (They also ran a nice essay about this time of year by Melissa Kirsch that you can read here.)

March New Releases

We have so many new books coming for you! Get ready for a wall of text, and drum roll please…here they are:

The Tell by Amy Griffin, 33 Place Brugmann by Alice Austen, Sunrise on the Reaping by Susanne Collins, Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green, The Strawberry Patch Pancake House by Laurie Gilmore, The Maverick’s Museum by Blake Gopnik, The Girl from Greenwich Street by Lauren Willig, Martha Stewart’s Gardening Handbook by Martha Stewart, The Story She Left Behind by Patti Callahan Henry, Theft by Abdulrazak Gurnah, While We’re Young by K. L. Walther, Beach Vibes by Susan Mallery, Tilt by Emma Pattee, Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall, Killer Potential by Hannah Deitch, Saltwater by Katy Hays, Jane and Dan at the End of the World by Colleen Oakley.

Giulia, our resident historical fiction expert, is most excited for 33 Place Brugmann – her Bompa (Flemish for grandfather) grew up in a setting very similar to this book’s. Aidan is impatiently waiting for Sunrise on the Reaping, and Áine is looking forward to Jane and Dan at the End of the World.

Currently Reading

Debbie is reading Green Jolene and the Neighborhood Swap by Wendy Mass. I am reading this book by the fabulous Wendy Mass in honor of International Women’s Day/Month! Although I have only begun reading, I’ve already found a fondness for Jolene, her plucky self-confidence, terrific sense of humor, and her humility. If you love Ivy & Bean, Jolene will surely satisfy even the choosiest reader.

Aidan is reading Sister Snake by Amanda Lee Koe. This book reminds me a little bit of The Fix Wife by Yangze Choo in that both books are about long-lived animal spirits, but Sister Snake leans more heavily into exploring the relationships between immortals; I am always fascinated by these kinds of relationships.

Áine is reading The Satyricon by Petronius. Admittedly, I am reading this book for class, so my intentions are not entirely pure, but I am enjoying every single minute. The Canterbury Tales is far and away one of my favorite books, and The Satyricon has the same spirit and humor. I highly recommend this book if you are looking to laugh, perhaps recognize a few people you know, and settle into a (maybe-not-so) fictionalized Ancient Rome.

Giulia is reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. After hearing one of my teachers sing this book’s praises when I was in middle school, it has always stuck out to me, but I never got around to reading it until my best friends from my semester abroad in Amsterdam spoke about it. When they talked about it, I recalled my teacher singing its praises and thought, “it’s time.” So, now I am more than halfway through and man, oh man is it a journey. I have been breathlessly tumbling through every page, truly marveling at every description and inner thought – in much the same way Theo marvels at the goldfinch.

Jordan is reading Lawrence of Arabia by Ralph Fiennes. This book is a history of Lawrence of Arabia, which has been told numerous times, but the author’s thoughts and additions to the story make it one of a kind. He, just like Lawrence, fought alongside Arabs in a war for their freedom, and with so many similarities in their stories it really brings a new dimension to the events as they played out. I love this book; I am about halfway through, and I find it to be one of the most entertaining history books I’ve read in a while. I find that the author has a deep knowledge of the content and is able to attest to the experiences Lawrence had.

It’s one of the most important things we can do right now – keep reading and learning through eyes and minds different from our own.”
