Debbie is reading Green Jolene and the Neighborhood Swap by Wendy Mass. I am reading this book by the fabulous Wendy Mass in honor of International Women’s Day/Month! Although I have only begun reading, I’ve already found a fondness for Jolene, her plucky self-confidence, terrific sense of humor, and her humility. If you love Ivy & Bean, Jolene will surely satisfy even the choosiest reader.
Aidan is reading Sister Snake by Amanda Lee Koe. This book reminds me a little bit of The Fix Wife by Yangze Choo in that both books are about long-lived animal spirits, but Sister Snake leans more heavily into exploring the relationships between immortals; I am always fascinated by these kinds of relationships.
Áine is reading The Satyricon by Petronius. Admittedly, I am reading this book for class, so my intentions are not entirely pure, but I am enjoying every single minute. The Canterbury Tales is far and away one of my favorite books, and The Satyricon has the same spirit and humor. I highly recommend this book if you are looking to laugh, perhaps recognize a few people you know, and settle into a (maybe-not-so) fictionalized Ancient Rome.
Giulia is reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. After hearing one of my teachers sing this book’s praises when I was in middle school, it has always stuck out to me, but I never got around to reading it until my best friends from my semester abroad in Amsterdam spoke about it. When they talked about it, I recalled my teacher singing its praises and thought, “it’s time.” So, now I am more than halfway through and man, oh man is it a journey. I have been breathlessly tumbling through every page, truly marveling at every description and inner thought – in much the same way Theo marvels at the goldfinch.
Jordan is reading Lawrence of Arabia by Ralph Fiennes. This book is a history of Lawrence of Arabia, which has been told numerous times, but the author’s thoughts and additions to the story make it one of a kind. He, just like Lawrence, fought alongside Arabs in a war for their freedom, and with so many similarities in their stories it really brings a new dimension to the events as they played out. I love this book; I am about halfway through, and I find it to be one of the most entertaining history books I’ve read in a while. I find that the author has a deep knowledge of the content and is able to attest to the experiences Lawrence had. |
